Description

This is a compilation of bands who have played at my house, here in Elkhorn, WI. I originally put this together in an effort to spread the word about DIY in Elkhorn, but it ended up becoming a sweet compilation in general. Songs marked with a * are either new, recorded for this comp, alternate recordings, etc. and at the time only appear on this compilation. This is about 95 minutes of music. I can provide a digital download if you want one. Listen to it in your car.

Description

Empire! Empire! (i was a lonely estate) is an emo/indie band from Michigan. Very heartfelt, emotional songs with twinkly guitars and epic jams. This is the tape release of their upcoming album, and I'm really excited about it. The LP and CD versions are going to be released between Count Your Lucky Stars, strictly no capital letters, and Stiff Slack Records. E!E! consists of some of the nicest/coolest people I've ever met, and I'm really happy to be a part of this. Digital version available upon request.

*This song is not on the CD version, but is also on the Vinyl and Japanese version.

Description

Back when my label was first starting, Ilya saw that I was listening to his band on last.fm and decided to contact me and ask if I wanted to release something for his band in the US. After about a year of not getting anything released for them for various reasons (no internet in Siberia, art problems, me procrastinating, etc), we've finally worked out a release.

This tape is a collection of their first self titled album, two EPs (All Roads Lead Southeast and Secret Handshakes), and three bonus live tracks. All of which were never released here in the US.

There were 150 copies made (50 of three different colors) with artwork done by the wonderful Jeffery Ramirez (allinvisiblethings.com).

Description

This tape is a collection of Empire! Empire!'s early EPs (When The Sea Became A Giant and Year of the Rabbit), as well as the track from the 09 tour EP and a new track recorded for this tape. This was originally going to be released by a tape label from Mexico, but then the guy took everyone's preorder money (including mine), and disappeared. So here, a long while later, we finally have done a proper release of this and it turned out really great. All albums come with a digital download.

SIDE B (Joie De Vivre):

  1. Of Up and Coming Monarchs (originally by Pedro the Lion)
  2. You Ruined Everything That Was Ever Good
  3. Another Month, Another Season

Description

My second release from both Joie De Vivre and Sleep Bellum Sonno. The Sleep songs on this release are a bit less yelly than their last tracks, instead revisiting some of the more mellow/post-rock elements from their LP. The Joie tracks have a Pedro The Lion cover, and two songs from the very limited Tour EP. A bit more upbeat than the North End, but still pretty bummer. Good stuff.

Note: The Sleep Bellum Sonno songs on the tape are a different recording than the digital download. The two on the tape are exclusive to the tape itself. (digital download code included with tape)

Description

Your City/State was a band from Rockford, IL. This tape is a collection of everything they've ever done and somehow managed to record or play live. They liked drinking and listening to the Get Up Kids. A few of them went on to form Joie De Vivre. Chris French, when asked about his time with the band, told me "Sorry man, that band is dead to me." He misses them dearly and is glad this tape exists.

Dude Japan is an indie pop band from Long Island, NY. Mike, the frontman, also runs Rok Lok Records and has been in many other long island bands over the years. This is the new full length, and Rok Lok is handling the CD release of it, whereas I'm handling the tape. Great art by Jonathan Kaplan. I messed up a form so the ink on the tape looks sort of silly. My bad.

Rapid Cities were an emo band from New Jersey. Not twinkly and pretty like a lot of modern emo bands, but much more like Dischord bands from the 90s. Rough vocals and driving melodies. 6. Joie De Vivre - Magnet (Live)

Description

Joie De Vivre broke up. Their final show was May 28th. This tape was made for that show. It has some acoustic tracks and some of their friends covering their songs. I am very sad to see them go. The show was crazy. I assume you are familiar with Joie, but if you aren't by now, they play bummer emo songs. On this tape they are all acoustic. The B-side has a wide variety of bands playing their songs. Most of them don't sound like Joie at all. I miss them already.

For The Agenda is Anton. For The Agenda has released a few tapes already, all Anton's unique style of lofi indie/singersongwriter stuff. This release is his new full length, and I find myself having a hard time trying to describe it to you. Some acoustic, some stuff borderlining on electronic music, some post rock mixed in, emo, who knows what else. It's good. Anton plays in Monument and Shat Shorts, and used to be in bands like the Summer We Went West and Dawn Treader. The art on this tape is especially awesome. Include a full color insert with the lyrics. On the inside, it says that it is KIT-014, but it's actually KIT-019.

Description

Summer Vacation is a punk/indie band from California comprised of some ex-screamo/hardcore dudes. They had a lot of tape EPs before this, but this is their first full length album. It's so good. I was trying to think of ways to describe it, but I couldn't really come up with a good way besides saying just that; it's so good. Upbeat, catchy songs that make me want to dance and rock out. The vinyl of this album was released by Recess records and the CD was released by Lauren Records.

Description

YNTL is a scottish emo band. This tape is a collection of their first two EPs, a song from a split, and a live B-side. Twinkly guitars, bummer lyrics, really catchy tunes that get stuck in your head. I find these songs stuck in my head all the time, even if I haven't listened to them for a little bit. The tape plant originally messed up and sent me a bunch of tapes with double A side. If for some reason you would prefer a tape with a double A side instead of having a live side, let me know.

Sofy Major are a hardcore/noise/metal band from France. Their earlier work leaned towards french emo/screamo (like Amanda Woodward, Daitro, etc), but this new album takes them in a more sludge/metal/noise/hardcore direction. This album is a monster, clocking in around 65 minutes or so. Originally released as a double LP by a lot of labels, this is the tape/US/Canada release of the album. This album comes in a three color screenprinted cardboard jacket and includes a full color insert. The packaging/art is really awesome. Description

Sanctions is (was?) a crust/screamo/hardcore band from Nashville comprised embers of Cease Upon The Capitol, Karoshi, Moral Decay, and probably quite a few other bands. Ryan runs Meatcube label and Dan is part of Anti-Corp label. Ryan moved out west and Sanctions is on an 'indefinitely hiatus', but thankfully they managed to get this album recorded before all that happened. Melodic crust with dueling vocals and tons of rippers. I think a vinyl version of this is eventually coming out, but for now the there's only a tape.

Description

Mammoths is from Illinois and Living & Wrestling is from Milwaukee, WI. Mammoths is a post-rock band with some screamo elements, notably yelling. I was originally going to describe them as a screamo band with post-rock elements, but they sound more like Explosions in the Sky than they do City of Caterpillar, so take that how you will. Living & Wrestling is a screamo band. Some of their songs have a lot of buildup and some of them are really chaotic and crazy. They're really good live. Studying is an emo band from Virginia. This EP is appropriately titled 'songs about leaving home', and that's exactly what it is. Four songs about growing up and friends and being sad and stuff. Genuine sounding without coming off as too cheesy, unlike a lot of modern emo bands. Messy guitars and sang/yelled/cried vocals. Good stuff.

Description

Low-pass is an instrumental math-rock band from Japan. They remind me a lot of LITE, Toe, etc. Lots of finger-tapping and catchy hooks. Description

This is a split between five young, relatively unheard of Japanese bands. Blue Friend is an emo/screamo band with some clean guitars and two guys yelling back and forth. From Ten To Nine is sort of a noise rock band that reminds me a bit of the Jesus Lizard or something. Cofun is a screamo band that sort of sound like a Japanese version of Lost in Bazaar. Kanataharuka is an emo band, and they remind me of 90s emo bands. None But Air is a post-rock/shoegaze band, mostly instrumental with some samples and yelling. This tape came in to be because Ryoma (of Cofun and None but air) started following me on twitter and then I listened to his bands and liked them a lot. Neat. Hardcore/emo stuff with high-pitched sung/shouted vocals. So good. This album is also going to be released on vinyl by a few other labels, but the tape is only a Keep It Together release. Saisa is a post-rock band from Japan. Very mellow, longer songs with vocals that basically act as another instrument. Only a three piece, they create a somewhat minimalist but very atmospheric post-rock sound. Someone told me they sound sort of like Sigor Ros, and I think that's pretty accurate. Description

Dowsing is an emo/indie band from Illinois. Upbeat jams with a keyboard and stuff. This tape was originally going to be a 'discography' tape of sorts, but then we decided to change it. This tape is a collection of demos, covers, weird recordings, etc. Before this release, half of them or so were available as a download online, and the rest are new to this tape. This is a split release with Count Your Lucky Stars.
